Monthly Meeting, Monday, March 7, 2011

·       The meeting was called to order at 7:15 PM by President Kevin O. In attendance: Kevin O., Kevin D., Kevin H., Mike D., and Ryan M.

Old Business

      ·       Dues collection is complete. Funds are being deposited.

·       Brother Mike R. has provided an update on the pub crawl. We have a preliminary list of establishments in mind: McGann's, Paddy O's, Purple Shamrock, Black Rose, Jose McIntyre's, Irish Times, and Mr. Dooley's. If you have any additional recommendations, please forward them to Brother Mike R. The crawl is tentatively scheduled for some time in April or May. We will also design a t-shirt to be sold to participants, which will include the AOH logo and a list of the participating pubs.

·       Our next major event is the 3rd Annual Boston an Gorta Mór Commemoration on May 22. We are working with Sen. Mike Rush (D-West Roxbury) to have the Massachusetts Senate pass a resolution commemorating the day.

·       We are still trying to contact the proper Archdiocesan officials before proceeding on the Tollgate Cemetery project. We hope to hold the clean up sometime in April or May, possibly with the cooperation of local Boy Scouts.

·       Over the past few months, we have attempted to contact National HQ, so that they might update their list of divisions at http://www.aoh.com. We have not yet received a reply. However, we are now directly linked on the State Board website.

·       Irish Northern Aid Boston will commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the 1981 Hunger Strike with a banquet on May 7 at Florian Hall in Dorchester. There will be a number of local and Irish guest speakers (including politicians from Sinn Féin), cocktails, dinner, and live music. Tickets are $75. Interested brothers can contact Cate Murphy at (617) 269-3530 or Brother Mike R.

New Business

·       On March 4, Gov. Patrick issued a proclamation declaring March to be "Irish Heritage Month" in the Commonwealth. Go raibh maith agat, Gov. Patrick!

·       Archbishop Seán Cardinal O'Malley will be offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass in honor of Saint Patrick on Thursday, March 17 at 12:00 Noon in the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. The Hibernians have been invited to serve as ushers. If you are interested, please contact Paul Griffin, (508) 222-0032, or Dick MacDonald, (781) 489-8591.

·       The State Board has advised us that this year's Massachusetts AOH/LAOH convention, originally scheduled for the weekend of June 3, has been cancelled.

·       The next State Board Meeting will be held on Saturday, April 19 at 12:00 Noon in Watertown. Division 14 will be hosting the event at their Hall. All members in good standing are encouraged to attend.

·       We have received a card from the family of Brother Robert Quinn, Division 14 Watertown, RIP, who passed away last fall. They are grateful for our donation to the ALS Association in his memory.

·       All the brothers offer their condolences to Brother Mike R. and his family on the death of their grandfather, Leonard Safford. An online obituary can be accessed here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/app/obituary.aspx?n=leonard-thomas-safford&pid=149018315. Go bhfaighe a anam agus anamacha na bhfíréan suaimhneas síoraí. Amen.

·       Brothers are reminded that next month's meeting will be on Monday, April 4. We will meet at Robyn's in Roslindale Square at 7:00 PM.

·       The business portion of the meeting was closed at 7:55 PM in commemoration of John Mitchel, the Irish nationalist and member of Young Ireland. Born in 1815, Mitchel is infamous for his election to Westminster in 1875, after which his victory was disqualified due to his conviction for felony sedition. March 7, 1846 marked the publication of Mitchel's ground breaking article "English Rule," which attributed the causes of an Gorta Mór not to "the rule of heaven," but to "the greedy and cruel policy of England." After being deported to Bermuda, Mitchel escaped to America in 1853, where he was involved with the Fenian Brotherhood.

Respectfully submitted,
